Canberra’s first stage of Light Rail is coming to your area, and construction is well underway. This is an exciting time in our City and Canberra Metro is working hard to see this vision come to life.
Most light rail construction work is being carried out during day hours as it is more efficient, as well as safer for workers and the public. However, in some circumstances, there will be some work that is required out-of-hours because it involves roads and intersection closures that must be accessible to peak and day traffic, particularly for emergency service vehicles.
Scope of Works:
Installation of storm water drainage pits and lines is required to be done within the median between Antill and Mouat Street intersection and Murdoch Street along Northbourne Avenue. The work, which will be on both sides (northbound and southbound), is proposed to take place over a three-week period starting at 6:00pm on Monday 19 February and will continue through to 6:00am Tuesday 13 March. Please note, there will be no out-of-hours work on Friday and Saturday evenings during this three-week period.
- Fast lane closures between Antill Street and Murdoch Street both Northbound and Southbound along Northbourne Avenue
- Northbourne Avenue north and southbound traffic unaffected
- Detours will be sign-posted, with traffic management in place and highly visible throughout the works.
- Pedestrian management will be in place to ensure the safe crossing of Northbourne Avenue
The equipment and plant to be used includes road saws and quick-cut saws, hydro-vac trucks, plate compactor, light vehicles, excavators, cranes and trucks. Due to the nature of the work, some of the activities will be noisy.
The construction team will limit these impacts wherever possible by reducing the number of machines operating at the same time and turning off equipment when not in use. Noise blankets will be installed where practical. Non-tonal reversing beepers will be used, and workers will be instructed to keep noise to a minimum.
Thank you for your patience during these important works.
